OUR TAKE / EDITORIAL OPINION

Metaculus is useful when disagreement stays visible

A community forecast should be the beginning of a question about assumptions.

Metaculus offers community probability forecasts, tournaments and scoring; its API requires authentication and places restrictions on commercial and AI/ML data use. This listing concerns the community forecasting platform, rather than the separate Radiant product. Our judgment is that its most useful role is as a structured place to compare expectations. We would resist turning a community number into an unexplained authority simply because it is easier to quote than the reasoning behind it.

We would consider Metaculus for someone who wants to formulate a forecast, revisit it and examine how their view differs from other forecasters. The tradeoff to watch is a convenient aggregate versus attention to the precise question and the reasons for disagreement. A reader should ask what evidence would change their own estimate before checking whether the aggregate makes that estimate feel comfortable.

A practical evaluation would follow one clearly defined question across several updates. Keep a short log of new evidence, personal revisions and changes in the displayed community forecast, without claiming causation between them. Assess whether the workflow makes the reasoning easier to revisit. For any application that plans to reuse data, review the specific API terms first. We would choose the platform for the discipline of revisable judgment, not as a substitute for having a judgment.
